World-renowned Experts Including Mark Maslin and Massamba Tioye to Participate at Lahan Hotel on July 3-4
Exchange with Global Climate Innovators...
A Real Turning Point Expected for Pohang's Climate Policy
Global climate innovation leaders are gathering in the industrial city of Pohang to explore sustainable transitions in industrial structures and seek urban-scale solutions for climate action in this era of climate crisis.
Pohang City will host the 'UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub (UN GIH) Systemic Innovation Workshop (S.I.W.)' at the Lahan Hotel from July 3 to 4.
This event, which focuses on climate change response and innovative technology cooperation, is drawing attention as world-renowned climate scientists and UN officials are expected to participate.
Key participants include Mark Maslin, Professor of Earth System Science at University College London (UCL) and author of 'Climate Change: A Very Short Introduction,' as well as Massamba Tioye, General Manager of the UN GIH project.
Professor Mark Maslin is a leading authority on climate change and Anthropocene research, having published more than 200 papers in SCI-level journals, with over 39,000 citations.

He has also participated in a wide range of international organizations, including COP26 to COP29, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP16, and the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
In particular, he was named the world's top thinker and influencer in sustainability by the global analytics platform Onalytica in 2023, and is well-known to the public through collaborations with outlets such as the BBC and the Guardian.
At this workshop, Professor Maslin will address the topic of 'Dilemmas and Choices for Industrial Cities in Responding to the Climate Crisis,' diagnosing the real-world challenges faced by industrial-based cities within the global trend toward carbon neutrality and presenting global solutions for sustainable industrial transformation.
General Manager Massamba Tioye, a key figure in the design and operation of the UN GIH, is leading international cooperation in areas such as urban climate innovation, the design of sustainability incentives, and strategies for the adoption of climate technologies.

With the motto 'Caring, Sharing, Daring,' which he presented as part of the UN climate innovation strategy at COP26 through COP28 and which earned him international trust, he is expected to lead in-depth discussions at this workshop on practical measures for climate action at the urban level.
Pohang City expects this event to go beyond academic exchange and become an action-oriented workshop that expands climate policy transformation and global cooperation networks.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "This workshop is a venue where climate science, policy, and technology converge," adding, "Exchange with global climate innovators will provide a real turning point for Pohang's climate policy."
To enhance the effectiveness of the event, Pohang City held a preliminary strategy meeting on June 6, where it reviewed climate response projects linked to local industries such as steel, secondary batteries, energy, and transportation. Based on this, the city is working to specify the discussion topics and approaches, aiming to strengthen practical policy connections and implementation feasibility.
The UN GIH is an innovation cooperation platform under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), supporting climate technology innovation and international cooperation for cities and institutions.
Pohang City strengthened its network by participating in a UN GIH event in Shenzhen, China, in September last year, and this year, by directly hosting the workshop, is further elevating its status on the international stage.
