Uijeongbu City to Suspend Parking Enforcement on Sunday Mornings Starting July 21

Uijeongbu City to Launch Flexible Parking Enforcement Pilot
Aiming to Alleviate Parking Shortages and Revitalize the Local Economy

Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Donggeun) announced on June 28 that starting July 21, it will launch a pilot operation of flexible parking enforcement tailored to local characteristics, aiming to alleviate parking shortages and revitalize the local economy simultaneously.

This pilot program will focus on sections within Minrak 2 District, where the parking environment is poor but traffic flow is not impeded. In particular, the city plans to reduce inconvenience for residents and encourage the securing of parking spaces by suspending parking enforcement during evening hours.

Based on a preliminary traffic volume survey, the city selected sections of roads with four or more lanes where vehicle traffic decreases after 7 p.m. as pilot zones: approximately 110 meters in both directions on a section of Cheonbo-ro (from World II Tower to Haedong Tower II), and approximately 200 meters in both directions on a section of Omok-ro 205beon-gil (from New York Plaza to Golden Plaza).

Currently, parking enforcement operates on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. In the designated pilot areas, enforcement will be suspended after 7 p.m. However, enforcement will continue in absolute no-parking zones, such as within 5 meters of crosswalks or intersections, as well as in cases of double parking or blocking vehicle entrances.

The city expects that this pilot operation will create approximately 87 additional parking spaces and provide a tangible improvement in the parking supply rate, thereby helping to resolve parking shortages in the area.

In addition, the city will simultaneously conduct a pilot program to extend the suspension of parking enforcement by one hour on Sunday mornings throughout the entire city.

Currently, parking enforcement on weekends and public holidays is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with enforcement suspended during lunchtime (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Previously, enforcement was carried out from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., but under the new pilot program, enforcement will be suspended during this hour on Sundays only.

The suspension of Sunday morning enforcement is intended to accommodate increased demand for religious, sports, and leisure activities on weekends, and ultimately to stimulate local commerce. The city plans to first identify key areas that require focused enforcement, such as habitual congestion zones, and then expand the one-hour Sunday morning enforcement suspension to Saturdays and public holidays as well.

Regarding this flexible enforcement pilot, the city will conduct an administrative notice period to gather public feedback until July 17. After collecting a wide range of citizen opinions, the pilot program will be fully implemented for six months starting July 21.

Nam Changmin, head of the Parking Management Division, stated, "We will prioritize citizens' transportation convenience and safety, and proactively implement flexible parking enforcement as long as it does not affect traffic flow."
