Expansion of Recipients from Newborn Households to Newlyweds
Donation of 200 65-inch Smart TVs Again This Year
Support for Addressing Low Birthrate and Population Recovery
"Considering Cooperation Not Only with Goheung but Also Other Regions"
SM Group's donations of smart TVs to Goheung County, South Jeolla Province, will be expanded this year to include not only households with newborns but also newlywed couples.
Woo Ohhyun, Chairman of SM Group. SM Group.
On June 27, Goheung County announced that SM Bexel, the manufacturing affiliate of SM Group, has donated 200 units of 65-inch smart TVs for the second consecutive year. Starting in July, newlywed couples who have registered their marriage will also be eligible to receive the TVs. Previously, at a donation ceremony held at Goheung County Office in April, SM Bexel and Goheung County Mayor Gong Youngmin discussed and reached a consensus on ways to expand the support.
This donation, which is part of SM Group's ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management policy, has been met with a positive response among the youth in Goheung County. In particular, considering that last year's initial donation was so popular that the TVs were quickly distributed, Chairman Woo Ohhyun decided to provide additional support again this year.
Chairman Woo, who is originally from Pungyang-myeon in Goheung County, reportedly chose to donate smart TVs as a way to encourage marriage and childbirth and provide tangible benefits, after carefully considering how to address the region's low birthrate and population decline.
An SM Group representative stated, "Chairman Woo Ohhyun emphasizes ESG practices and mutual growth with local communities as core priorities for the group," adding, "Based on the Goheung case, we also plan to actively consider cooperation with other regions."
This year, the eligible recipients are newlywed couples who have registered their marriage on or after July 1, with at least one spouse having resided in Goheung County for more than six months. SM Group and Goheung County plan to continue discussing ways to expand both the types and quantity of donated items based on the distribution status going forward.
