Over 1,400 Participants from 26 Countries
Strong Interest in Korean Fisheries Technologies and Policies
The Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), led by President Cho Jeonghee, announced on June 26 that it had successfully concluded the "2025 Latin America Fisheries Capacity Building Project" in cooperation with the National University of Callao in Peru.
This training program, now in its sixth year, was held online for three days starting June 24.
The program was designed to support the sustainable development of the fisheries sector in Latin American countries facing global challenges such as climate change and changes in the marine environment. KMI explained that this project contributes to strengthening the foundation for cooperation between the two regions by sharing Korea's advanced fisheries technologies and policy experiences.
More than 1,400 participants?including fishers, government officials, researchers, and businesspeople?from 26 Latin American countries such as Peru, Venezuela, Mexico, and Ecuador took part in the training, demonstrating strong interest in Korean fisheries technologies.
Over the three-day program, key Korean fisheries technologies and policy cases were intensively introduced, including: ▲ aquaculture development strategies and smart aquaculture technologies for responding to climate change, ▲ global seaweed industry trends and future challenges, ▲ strategies for responding to fisheries disasters and diseases, and ▲ the Fishing Village New Deal 300 policy. All participants who completed the training received certificates of completion.
A Peruvian official who participated in the program commented, "It was a meaningful opportunity to go beyond simply acquiring knowledge and to seek practical solutions together through real communication with Korean experts."
Cho Jeonghee, President of KMI, stated, "This training program is establishing itself as a leading platform for deepening fisheries cooperation between Korea and Latin America," and added, "We will further strengthen the partnership between the two regions through the 'Korea-Latin America Fisheries Forum' to be held in Peru this September."
