KT and Samsung Electronics Succeed in Developing AI-Based Wireless Network Optimization Technology: "Optimal Communication Environment" KT-Samsung Electronics Successfully Develop and Validate AI-Based Wireless Network Optimization Technology Yonhap News

On June 26, KT announced that it has successfully developed and validated AI-based wireless network optimization technology in collaboration with Samsung Electronics. The two companies expect that, in the future, networks will be able to autonomously assess smartphone users' situations and provide the optimal communication environment accordingly.

This development and validation project was jointly carried out by KT's Future Network Research Institute and Samsung Research, the advanced research and development (R&D) arm of Samsung Electronics.

Previously, it was technically difficult for networks to identify and respond to each user's situation in real time. As a result, the same network settings were uniformly applied to all devices connected to a single base station.

The AI-based wireless network optimization technology jointly developed by the two companies enables real-time assessment of each user's network usage environment, including signal stability, and automatically applies the optimal settings accordingly. This allows for more stable and faster communication quality for users, even in different environments.

In particular, the technology includes a function that learns users' movement patterns, remembers situations where problems occurred in the past, and takes proactive measures to prevent similar issues from recurring. The two companies expect this technology to improve connection quality and to serve as a representative use case for AI-based wireless networks (AI-RAN), which are expected to be fully introduced in the future.

AI-RAN refers to next-generation intelligent wireless network technology in which the network autonomously makes decisions and adjustments. This research is considered to have secured a core technology for 6G AI-native networks, which are next-generation communication infrastructures that fundamentally integrate artificial intelligence into the network architecture.

The joint research team from KT and Samsung Electronics collected various real-world network problem cases and conducted simulations based on these cases to verify the effectiveness of the technology. In the second half of the year, the companies plan to begin demonstrations in a testbed environment, followed by applying the technology to commercial networks to confirm its performance.

Jin-Kook Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of Next-Generation Communication Research Center at Samsung Research, said, "This joint research result is an important case that proves user-perceived quality in communication networks can be improved through the application of AI. Based on the collaboration between the two research institutes, we will continue to achieve technological innovation through the convergence of telecommunications and AI."

Jong-Sik Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of KT's Future Network Research Institute, added, "This joint research is a meaningful case that concretely demonstrates the feasibility of AI-based wireless network technology. Starting with this research, both organizations will continue to develop innovative technologies that can lead 6G through close cooperation in the future."
