From Euljiro 3-ga Station Intersection to the Entrance of Namsangol Hanok Village
Junggu District in Seoul will conduct a survey to determine the preferred honorary road name in celebration of the 480th anniversary of Admiral Yi Sun-sin's birth, aiming to enhance the historical and cultural status of the area as his birthplace.
Anyone interested in Junggu, including residents, can participate in this survey. The significance lies in deciding the honorary road name together with the community, thereby fostering local pride and a sense of community.
There are four candidate names for the honorary road: Yi Sun-sin-gil, Boy Yi Sun-sin-gil, Yi Sun-sin Dream-gil, and Hero Yi Sun-sin-gil. The section to be given the honorary road name stretches from Euljiro 3-ga Station intersection to the entrance of Namsangol Hanok Village. This area is close to the birthplace of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, and it is expected that citizens will naturally recognize the historical significance of the location in their daily lives through the new road name.
The preference survey will run until July 2. To participate, individuals can scan the QR code on the poster via the KakaoTalk channel "Buuungi" and respond to the survey. Among the participants, 10 people will be selected by lottery to receive a chicken gifticon, and 50 people will receive a convenience store gifticon worth 5,000 won.
The honorary road name system assigns a nickname that reflects the area's historical and cultural characteristics, while retaining the existing road name, to enhance the district's identity and urban image. On April 28, Junggu, the birthplace of Yi Sun-sin, declared its future vision, "Admiral Yi Sun-sin, The Great Beginning, Again in Junggu," in commemoration of the 480th anniversary of the admiral's birth, expressing its commitment to serve as a gateway to introduce this world-renowned hero to the world and to establish a city brand.
The honorary road naming, along with the creation of a memorial space at the birthplace site, is one of the projects aimed at allowing both locals and foreigners to encounter Admiral Yi Sun-sin in the Chungmuro area. The results of the preference survey will be reflected, and the honorary road name will be assigned in September this year.
Junggu stated, "Through the selection of this honorary road name, we will honor the spirit of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and engrave his legacy in the community so that many people can remember him," adding, "We ask for the active participation of our residents."
