Reborn as a Comprehensive Community Facility
Yangcheon-gu, Seoul announced on June 26 that it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Sinjeong 2-dong Community Center at the new construction site (329-9 Sinjeong-dong) on the morning of June 27, officially commencing the project.
This groundbreaking ceremony marks the first step in the district’s ongoing “Aged Community Center Reconstruction Project,” with Sinjeong 2-dong Community Center as the inaugural case. Over 200 residents and guests are expected to attend and celebrate the occasion. The groundbreaking event will include representatives from the community, such as senior citizens and children, as well as heads of professional organizations.

The existing Sinjeong 2-dong office, built in 1989, is the oldest community center in the area. Due to its limited space and outdated facilities, it has struggled to meet the rapidly increasing administrative demands. In addition, part of the site included state-owned land under the jurisdiction of the National Police Agency, which restricted its use. Since 2022, the district has held several property exchange negotiations with the National Police Agency and, last year, secured the state-owned land (Sinjeong 2 Police Center, 165 square meters), thereby initiating the reconstruction project in earnest.
The new community center will integrate the existing building and the Sinjeong 2-dong Police Center site, and will be constructed as a complex with two basement levels and five above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 2,514 square meters. Scheduled for completion in the first half of 2027, it will feature program rooms for residents, a book cafe, a multipurpose hall, a rooftop garden, a civil service office, and an underground parking lot with 12 spaces, transforming it into a comprehensive community facility encompassing leisure, culture, welfare, and administrative functions.
To ensure uninterrupted administrative services until the new building is completed, the district has been operating a temporary office (118-30 Sinjeong-dong) since March. In addition, the district is expediting the reconstruction of other aged community centers to improve resident convenience and administrative efficiency. The Mok 1-dong Community Center is scheduled to begin construction at the end of this year, with completion targeted for 2027. The Sinwol 1-dong and Sinwol 2-dong Community Centers are currently undergoing detailed design work, aiming for completion in 2028.
Lee Kijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, stated, “We aim to reconstruct aged community centers to meet changing times and residents’ needs, thereby providing higher-quality public services to our citizens. Starting with Sinjeong 2-dong, we will continue to rapidly advance the reconstruction of other community centers so they can become spaces that enhance residents’ lives.”
