6,000 to 7,000 Employees Laid Off in May
Microsoft (MS) is planning to carry out additional layoffs in its gaming division, Xbox, next week, according to a report by Bloomberg on June 24 (local time).
Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, reported that managers within Xbox are expecting significant layoffs across the organization. MS has not released an official statement regarding the matter.
Previously, MS made major workforce reductions in Xbox on three occasions last year and also shut down some subsidiaries. According to Bloomberg, Xbox, which produces video game hardware and software such as the Xbox console, has been under profitability pressure since acquiring game company Activision Blizzard for $69 billion in 2023.
This restructuring follows the layoff of 6,000 to 7,000 employees in May, taking place just two months later. Bloomberg reported that MS closes its fiscal year on June 30 each year, and it is customary for the company to conduct large-scale organizational restructuring in line with this schedule.
