Applications Accepted Until July 6
Sejong City announced that it will be recruiting participants for the "National Children's Hangeul King Contest" until July 6, in celebration of the first year of its Hangeul Culture City project, to encourage children to use the Korean language properly.
The contest will be held in two stages: a preliminary round on July 19 and the final round on August 23. It will comprehensively evaluate participants' knowledge of Hangeul spelling rules and pure Korean vocabulary through questions similar in difficulty to elementary school curricula.
The final round will feature a total of 50 elementary school students, including 48 who qualify through the preliminaries and 2 outstanding winners from the previous year, all competing to demonstrate their Hangeul proficiency.
Notably, the final competition will be produced and broadcast as a special television program.
The city plans to award the grand prize winner with the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award and a cash prize of 1.5 million won. Ten additional prizes and a total of 6.1 million won in prize money will be given to other winners. Kim Ryeosu, Director of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated, "The Hangeul King Contest will honor the spirit of King Sejong, who created Hangeul, and provide an opportunity for children across the country to appreciate the value of our language." Kim added, "Just as the Spelling Bee has gained global recognition, Sejong City will strive to further elevate the status of the Hangeul King Contest."
