Emergency Safety Measures Implemented at Daejeon Gawon School After Building Shaking

The Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education announced that it is implementing emergency safety measures for the building of Daejeon Gawon School, where classroom shaking recently occurred.

According to the Office of Education, although structural reinforcement work on the Gawon School building was completed in February, classroom shaking was reported on the 17th. An emergency joint inspection with a structural engineer was conducted, but no structural issues were found.

However, as anxiety among parents and staff persists, the Office is conducting an emergency detailed safety inspection to alleviate concerns. The detailed safety inspection includes ground surveys, crack inspections, building displacement measurements, and concrete compressive strength tests. The entire process, from on-site diagnosis to the final report, is expected to take 30 days.

On the 23rd, the Office of Education held an explanatory session for parents and staff expressing concerns, explaining that no abnormal signs such as cracks were found in the building's structural frame. It was also clarified that cracks inside the building were due to finishing materials and the joining of different materials, and do not affect the building's structural safety.

The Office of Education is continuously monitoring the affected classroom by installing measuring instruments. In addition, a response team composed of technical staff has been formed and stationed at the school to detect any additional shaking and to provide ongoing support.

Cho Gwangmin, head of the Facilities Division at the Daejeon Office of Education, stated, "We are doing our utmost to ensure safety by conducting a detailed safety inspection and operating a response team so that the school community can feel reassured."
