Golden Hour for Cardiac Arrest Patients Is Only 4 Minutes
CPR Increases Survival Rate by 2 to 3 Times
Only 1 in 10 Acute Cardiac Arrest Victims Survive

A man in his 60s who collapsed inside a car while passing through a congested road on his way home from work was saved by the prompt response of citizens and police officers. On June 25, a post titled "A Stopped Heart, the 8-Minute Miracle" was uploaded to the YouTube channel 'Seoul Police.' According to the post, at around 6 p.m. on June 11, a report was received that a man in his 60s, identified as Mr A, lost consciousness and collapsed while riding in a car on Olympic-daero. The driver reported to emergency services that "the passenger collapsed with foam at his mouth." Police were dispatched to the scene after receiving a joint response request from the fire department.

At the time, two vehicles were stopped on one side of the road with their hazard lights on. Mr A, who had collapsed beside a truck, was in cardiac arrest with no breathing or consciousness, and a citizen was performing CPR. The responding police officers continued the CPR, while another officer managed the heavy traffic during rush hour to ensure the ambulance could arrive quickly.

With the help of citizens and police officers, Mr A regained his pulse within 8 minutes of collapsing. He was transported to the hospital by paramedics and is now reportedly receiving treatment and has recovered his health. Viewers who watched the video commented, "It's amazing that CPR was performed non-stop for 8 minutes to save a life," "If quick action hadn't been taken before the ambulance arrived, it could have been a real disaster," and "Both the citizens and the police officers are truly admirable."

Meanwhile, statistics show that only about 1 in 10 patients with sudden cardiac arrest survive. The golden hour for sudden cardiac arrest patients is approximately 4 minutes. After 4 minutes, brain damage begins, and in the worst cases, it can lead to death. On the other hand, if CPR is performed within 4 minutes, the patient's survival rate increases by 2 to 3 times. For this to happen, the first witness must calmly perform initial emergency measures such as CPR with appropriate pressure and speed.
