Gyeonggi Province to Expand Local Road No. 78 from Okgyeri to Sangri in Yeoncheon

Administrative Procedures to Begin in June

Gyeonggi Province announced on June 25 that it will begin administrative procedures, including the designation of the road zone, for a total of 4.25 km section of Local Road No. 78 from Okgyeri, Gunnam-myeon, Yeoncheon-gun to Sangri, Yeoncheon-eup, starting in June.

Following the armored vehicle accident involving Hyosun and Miseon in 2002, the province has carried out road improvement projects for military training routes. This project is a continuation and the final remaining section of the "Local Road No. 78 Samgeo~Okgye Military Training Road Improvement Project," which was completed in 2016. With a total budget of 21.7 billion won, the project will widen the narrow lanes of Local Road No. 78 between Okgyeri in Gunnam-myeon and Sangri, and install four intersections.

This section of road construction is located in a border area, where the movement of military training vehicles causes traffic difficulties. The narrow lane width compared to the width of armored vehicles leads to frequent centerline violations and driving on the shoulder, resulting in a constant risk of traffic accidents.

To build a safe and comfortable road, Gyeonggi Province plans to start with the designation of the road zone in June, followed by land compensation and construction beginning in 2026.

Kang Seongsup, Director of Construction for Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will do our utmost to improve the underdeveloped transportation infrastructure in the border area and build a road that is safe and convenient for everyone, resolving the long-standing inconveniences of local residents," adding, "We will strive to provide high-quality road services as quickly as possible."
