"Leveraging Experience from the Roh Moo-hyun Administration
to Lead Inter-Korean Cooperation"
The small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) community has expressed its welcome for the nomination of Chung Dongyoung as the first Minister of Unification under the Lee Jaemyung administration.
On the 24th, the Korea Federation of SMEs stated in a commentary, "Candidate Chung is considered the right person to lead the resumption of inter-Korean economic cooperation projects, as he played a key role in the establishment and initial operation of the Kaesong Industrial Complex during his tenure as Minister of Unification in the Roh Moo-hyun administration."
The statement continued, "The Kaesong Industrial Complex has provided SMEs with more favorable conditions than overseas expansion, as it enables the use of a workforce with similar culture and language and the production of 'Made in Korea' products. Even now, over 90% of companies previously located in the complex hope to return. Amid worsening business conditions for SMEs due to intensifying domestic and international competition and the influx of low-priced imports, the reopening of the Kaesong Industrial Complex is expected to enhance the competitiveness of SMEs by reducing production costs."
