A man in his 40s who raped and murdered a woman in her 20s living in the same gosiwon has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the first trial.
On June 24, the Criminal Division 15 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judge Yang Hwansung) sentenced Lee (44), who was indicted on charges including rape and murder, to life imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, on January 4 at around 10:00 p.m., Lee took the victim, who lived in another room, to his own room in a gosiwon in Dorim-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, where he raped and murdered her. Lee turned himself in to the police the day after the crime. It was revealed that he committed the crime after the victim refused to give him her phone number when he asked.
The police initially referred Lee to the prosecution on murder charges, but the prosecution, after analyzing his mobile phone and securing related video footage, indicted him on charges of rape and murder.
