The Carbon Neutrality Research Institute announced on the 24th that it has been selected as a final participant in the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' "Deep Tech Value-Up" program and will begin a collaborative project with LG Science Park.
The Deep Tech Value-Up program is an open innovation initiative in which venture companies and startups fostered by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups collaborate with global conglomerates. This year, major companies such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Hyundai Motor Company, LG Science Park, POSCO Holdings, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and KT participated. The ministry selects around 50 startups based on recommendations from the Centers for Creative Economy & Innovation, following a demand survey of large corporations, and provides up to 200 million KRW in collaborative funding to optimize technology and support global market expansion.
The Carbon Neutrality Research Institute and LG Science Park have set "Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculation" as their core task, and plan to establish an effective system for quantifying and verifying carbon emissions.
Recently, there has been a rapid increase in the demand for calculating carbon emissions throughout the entire product manufacturing process, especially in major countries such as the EU, the United States, Korea, and China. There are also growing cases where PCF information at the raw material stage is explicitly required as a bidding condition. The Carbon Neutrality Research Institute will jointly design a response process that can be practically applied through this project.
Lee Min, CEO of the Carbon Neutrality Research Institute, said, "Through participation in this project, the institute has secured an opportunity for demonstration based on the needs of large corporations, and has established a foothold to enhance its proprietary technological capabilities and credibility." He added, "Based on the results of this collaboration, we plan to expand our solutions to support responses across the entire global supply chain."
