Qatar is reported to have played a mediating role in the ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
On June 23 (local time), Reuters quoted a source familiar with the negotiations as saying that Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani of Qatar, during a phone call with Iranian authorities that day, persuaded Iran to accept the US proposal for a ceasefire.
This call took place after Iran attacked the US military base stationed in Qatar. The New York Times previously reported, citing Iranian officials, that Iran had informed and coordinated with the Qatari government in advance of the attack on the US base in Qatar in order to minimize casualties.
Reuters added that this phone call occurred immediately after US President Donald Trump informed Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani that Israel had agreed to a ceasefire and requested that he persuade Iran to do the same.
The Jerusalem Post, an Israeli media outlet, also reported that Qatar played a mediating role, citing diplomatic sources familiar with the matter.
