Lim Taehee, Gyeonggi Provincial Superintendent of Education, announced that he will complete the AI teaching and learning platform "Hi-Learning" and the "AI Essay and Short-Answer Assessment System," which will be piloted in July as part of university admission reforms, by the end of next year. He also expressed his intention to run for re-election next year.
At a press conference marking his third year in office, held on June 23 at the southern office of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education in Gwanggyo, Suwon, Superintendent Lim stated, "We are hearing from teachers and students that classrooms have changed thanks to 'Hi-Learning,' the AI teaching and learning platform developed by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education." He added, "By the end of next year, we will build the necessary infrastructure so that there will be no obstacles to Hi-Learning classes."
He continued, "For education to be properly established, the university admissions system must change. The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education has developed an assessment system (for essay and short-answer questions), which has been well received in recent demonstrations by the education community. Kyungpook National University has even expressed interest in using and evaluating it in their university curriculum." He added, "By the end of next year, I believe that a universally recognized essay and short-answer assessment system will be developed in Gyeonggi."
The AI Essay and Short-Answer Assessment System developed by the provincial office converts students' handwritten answers to essay and short-answer questions into digital text using an OCR engine. It then automatically grades them based on the curriculum achievement standards of the 2022 revised curriculum and assessment elements (rubrics) input by teachers. The provincial office plans to integrate this system into Hi-Learning and apply it from July to first-year middle school and first-year high school students in Korean, social studies, and science subjects within the province.
Regarding his achievements during his three-year term, Superintendent Lim said, "Through the Gyeonggi Shared School, we have expanded diverse learning opportunities that allow students to pursue their dreams using various educational resources both inside and outside of schools and within the local community." He also stated, "By opening the Gyeonggi Online School, we have provided broad educational opportunities that respond to the high school credit system and overcome the constraints of time and space."
He went on to promise, "During the remainder of my term, I will strengthen the learning safety net and address educational disparities by expanding and enhancing public education." He added, "I will steadfastly pursue policies that protect the essence of education and prioritize students' growth and the development of future competencies."
Regarding his intention to run for re-election next year, Superintendent Lim said, "I believe the stage where a candidate for elected office makes a decision based solely on personal ambition is already past." He added, "If there are tasks left for me to accomplish and there is a clear demand from society, I will make my decision accordingly," effectively expressing his intention to seek a second term.
