Meeting with CIO Chief on the 24th,
Request for Dispatch of Senior Prosecutors
Special Prosecutor Lee Myunghyun, who is investigating the death in the line of duty of Marine Chae Sangbyeong, announced that on June 24 he will formally request the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) to dispatch senior prosecutors, including Lee Daehwan and Cha Junghyun, to his team.
On the morning of June 23, Lee made this statement to reporters on his way to his law office in Seocho-dong, Seoul, when asked about his meeting schedule with the CIO chief. His intention is to strengthen the investigative team by bringing in Lee and Cha, who have been leading the investigation of the death case within the CIO. Prosecutor Lee Daehwan is the chief prosecutor of the CIO’s third division, which is in charge of the Marine’s death case, and Prosecutor Cha Junghyun is serving as the head of the investigation team.
Regarding the official start of the investigation, Special Prosecutor Lee responded, “Once the office location is finalized, the special prosecutor’s procedures will likely proceed quickly.” The special prosecutor’s team has selected the Heenmulgyul Building in Seocho-dong as its office, but is also considering other buildings in the Seocho-dong area. Lee emphasized, “We can only hold meetings about dispatched personnel or future investigations once the office is confirmed,” adding, “Securing the office is the most urgent task.”
As a result, the joining of dispatched personnel is also being delayed. Previously, on June 20, Special Prosecutor Lee met with Vice Minister of National Defense Kim Sunho and requested the dispatch of 20 investigators, including military prosecutors.
