President Lee Jaemyung will preside over a meeting of senior presidential aides on the 23rd. This will be the first time since his inauguration, 19 days ago.
President Lee will convene his first meeting of senior aides at the Yongsan presidential office at 2 p.m. on this day to review current issues. The meeting of senior aides is a forum where the president, along with key advisors such as the Chief of Staff, Chief Policy Officer, National Security Advisor, and senior secretaries, gather to discuss major agenda items.
At the meeting, President Lee is expected to assess the impact of the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, as well as the U.S. airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, on the Korean economy and people's livelihoods. International oil prices are already on the rise. As of the 13th, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures was $74.23 per barrel, but as of the 20th, just one week later, it had risen to $76.84. Brent crude futures also increased from $74.23 to $77.01 during the same period.
In particular, since President Lee has decided not to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in The Hague, Netherlands, scheduled for June 24-25, future countermeasures are also expected to be discussed. There may continue to be pressure for South Korea to clarify its position on the Israel-Iran conflict and the Ukraine-Russia war, making it necessary to establish a sophisticated strategy. The supplementary budget bill amounting to 30.5 trillion won, which has passed the Cabinet meeting, is also among the current issues.
Meanwhile, the name of the senior aides meeting has varied depending on the administration. It appears that the new administration has decided to use the same name, "meeting of senior aides," as was used during the Moon Jaein administration. Under the Yoon Sukyeol administration, it was called the "meeting of senior secretaries."
