IAEA Briefing Scheduled... Iran and Israel Expected to Attend
The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting on the afternoon of the 22nd (local time) to discuss instability in the Middle East following the United States' attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.
According to diplomats from Security Council member states, the Council is holding an official meeting at 3 p.m. at the UN headquarters in New York, United States, to address the issue of the U.S. airstrikes on Iran, following Iran's request for an emergency session.
Briefings are scheduled to be delivered by the UN Secretariat and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the attendance of representatives from both Iran and Israel is also expected.
Previously, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the U.S. attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, stating, "The United States, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has seriously violated the UN Charter, international law, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) by attacking Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities."
The United States attacked three major nuclear facilities in Iran?Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan?on the afternoon of the 21st, Eastern Time. U.S. President Donald Trump, in a national address at the White House the previous day, stated, "Iran's main uranium enrichment facilities have been completely and entirely eliminated," explaining that the purpose of the attack was "to destroy Iran's uranium enrichment capabilities and to deter the nuclear threat posed by the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism."
