Heatwave Warnings Issued for Three States...
Temperatures May Reach 46 Degrees in Some Areas
Caffeine and Alcohol Can Cause Dehydration, Experts Warn
The US National Weather Service has advised residents to refrain from consuming caffeine and alcohol. This recommendation comes in response to a heatwave warning issued for the western region of the United States.
According to international media outlets such as Fox News, the US National Weather Service (NWS) issued heatwave warnings for three western states?California, Arizona, and Nevada?on June 18 and 19 (local time). In particular, some areas in southern Arizona are forecast to see temperatures soar as high as 46 degrees Celsius.
The Las Vegas branch of the NWS announced on its official social media channels, "Avoid going outside during periods of intense sunlight, and make sure to stay hydrated to prevent dehydration." The agency further advised, "It is best to avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they can have a diuretic effect."
Experts have echoed these warnings. Nutritionist Lauren Manaker told Fox News, "You may want to reconsider having a cold beer or cocktail during extreme heat." She explained that there is a risk these beverages could actually worsen dehydration.
Manaker added, "Alcohol causes the body to lose fluids and can interfere with temperature regulation, which may increase the risk of heatstroke."
Regarding caffeine, she noted that moderate consumption is generally not a problem, but excessive intake may lead to fluid loss through its diuretic effects, similar to alcohol. Manaker stated, "One or two cups of coffee or tea are unlikely to cause severe dehydration, but it is important to monitor your body's response closely," emphasizing, "Above all, you must ensure adequate fluid intake."
She also stressed the importance of choosing the right hydration beverages during a heatwave. Manaker explained, "Milk is more effective at maintaining hydration than plain water or sports drinks," adding, "It is rich in electrolytes and nutrients such as calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium, making it beneficial for recovery after exercise."
In fact, a 2016 study by the University of St Andrews Medical School in the United Kingdom found that skim milk was the most effective beverage for hydration.
Meanwhile, the NWS emphasized that managing dietary habits during a heatwave is also important. Excessive protein intake can raise body temperature during digestion, so it is necessary to adjust your diet appropriately in hot weather.
Manaker advised, "Avoid excessive protein intake or foods that are difficult to digest, and opt for light and fresh meals such as salads or grilled vegetables."
