Gyeonggi Province has finalized the name of its advanced environmental monitoring equipment as "Cheomdan Hwangyeong G-Kimi."
On June 22, Gyeonggi Province announced that, as a result of a public contest held from March to April, it selected "Cheomdan Hwangyeong G-Kimi" as the official name for its scientific environmental management system, which utilizes advanced monitoring equipment such as Scanning LiDAR (for measuring fine dust using laser beams) and thermal imaging camera drones (for detecting air pollution sources).
The name "Cheomdan Hwangyeong G-Kimi" carries the meaning of "an environmental guardian who protects the environment with advanced technology."
Since September 2023, Gyeonggi Province has established several initiatives for managing businesses that emit environmental pollutants. These include: ▲ the first nationwide introduction of Scanning LiDAR, which monitors air pollution in industrial complexes 24 hours a day by emitting laser beams into the atmosphere and measuring fine dust within 30 minutes; ▲ drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras for detecting air pollution sources; and ▲ the establishment of an integrated control center for managing information on environmental pollutants.
Through this system, Gyeonggi Province operates a multi-layered monitoring framework that addresses blind spots in illegal emissions, enables data-driven precision enforcement, and provides rapid responses to public complaints.
In fact, last year, the province inspected 246 businesses located in high fine dust concentration areas within the Siwha National Industrial Complex, uncovering 23 violations such as non-operation of air pollution prevention facilities. Additionally, on-site inspections of industrial complexes with frequent complaints using drones identified 57 violations, including damage to and neglect of prevention facilities.
Building on these achievements, Gyeonggi Province expanded the operation sites for Scanning LiDAR this month to three additional industrial complexes: Ansan-Siheung Banwol-Siwha National Industrial Complex, Pyeongtaek Poseung National Industrial Complex, and Dongducheon Dongducheon General Industrial Complex. The number of drone operation teams also increased from two to five.
Kim Kyungho, Director of the Climate and Environment Management Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The environmental management system utilizing advanced monitoring equipment is not just about applying technology; it is a core policy for realizing an environmental safety net that residents can truly feel." He added, "We will expand trust and consensus with residents, centering on the policy brand 'Cheomdan Hwangyeong G-Kimi.'"
