National Policy Planning Committee Urges Fair Trade Commission to Establish Relief Fund for Technology Theft Victims

The National Policy Planning Committee, which serves as the transition team for the Lee Jaemyung administration, urged the Fair Trade Commission on June 20 to establish a relief fund for companies that have suffered from technology theft.

According to a press release, the committee received a business report from the Fair Trade Commission at the Government Sejong Convention Center on the same day. During the meeting, the committee reviewed key policy tasks, including the establishment of a fair platform ecosystem, the eradication of technology theft and protection of subcontractor payments, and measures to safeguard the rights and interests of franchise owners.

Members of the Economic Subcommittee 1 and planning and expert advisors called on the Fair Trade Commission to play an active role in expediting case processing and establishing a relief fund to eradicate technology theft and support victimized companies.

The committee also discussed issues closely related to people's livelihoods, such as increasing price transparency for wedding service packages known as 'Seudeume' (studio photography, dress, and makeup), preventing gym and Pilates studio 'Meoktwi' (fraudulent closures), and addressing commission fees for delivery services, kiosks, and table orders.

Jung Taeho, Chair of Economic Subcommittee 1, also requested that the Fair Trade Commission consider ways to resolve unfair practices and improve work systems during the digital transformation in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).

In addition, the Economic Subcommittee 2 of the National Policy Planning Committee emphasized the need to develop practical strategies for balanced regional development during a business report from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Lee Choonseok, Chair of Economic Subcommittee 2, called for the establishment of actionable policies for balanced development to revitalize neglected and declining local areas.

The committee also discussed housing supply and support measures for young people, newlyweds, and the elderly; strategies to foster advanced industries such as autonomous vehicles and urban air mobility (UAM); measures to strengthen safety management in response to ground subsidence; and the eco-friendly transition of the land and transportation sector to achieve carbon neutrality.

During the business report from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the Social Subcommittee 1 of the National Policy Planning Committee focused on the importance of securing infrastructure to prepare for disease pandemics. The committee also discussed ensuring diagnosis and treatment for rare diseases, disease prevention and management in the context of the climate crisis, and agreed to continue discussions on policy improvements for managing chronic diseases, according to the committee.
