'Refusal Movement' Spreads in Far-Right Communities
"They'll Probably Use It First"... Wave of Cynicism Erupts
The claim to boycott the 'National Livelihood Support Fund,' also known as the 'consumer coupon,' which the Lee Jaemyung administration is promoting to boost the economy and stabilize the livelihoods of ordinary citizens, is spreading among some far-right online communities.
On June 20, various social networking services (SNS) and online communities saw the spread of images calling for participation in this so-called 'consumer coupon refusal movement.'
The image in question begins with the phrase, "Did you remain silent again today for a single coupon?" It goes on to state, "The consumer coupon is the government's candy to tame you with your own tax money," and argues, "Let us no longer be swayed by the government's populist policies and refuse to accept the coupon. Refusing to accept the coupon is the first step toward changing this country." Hashtags such as '#RejectPigPolicy' and '#WeAreSovereignCitizens' are also included.
In response, some people have reacted with satire and mockery. One netizen sarcastically commented, "Just try using it. Make sure to refuse every single one you receive and return them all. Be sure to post proof. I support you." Other cynical responses included, "They'll probably use it first," "If you won't use it, send it to my account," "A true patriot who cares about taxpayers' money has appeared," "Please don't accept it and make sure to upload a proof shot," and "Everyone knows that after stirring things up like this, they'll end up using it themselves."
Meanwhile, on June 19, the government decided in a Cabinet meeting to approve the second supplementary budget and provide consumer coupons worth at least 150,000 won and up to 500,000 won per person to all citizens. The government predicted that about 42.96 million people would receive the standard amount of 250,000 won. The coupons can be received in the form of local gift certificates, prepaid cards, or credit/debit cards, and will be distributed in two installments. The specific payment schedule and usage details will be finalized soon through a task force involving relevant ministries.
