Second Place in Citizen Vote: "Kkumssi Family,"
Third Place: "Opening of Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark"
The city of Daejeon announced that, marking the third anniversary of the 8th popularly elected administration, the groundbreaking for Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2 was selected by citizens as the "top news story."
In a citizen vote conducted through "Daejeon Siso," a policy proposal platform, from June 4 to June 13, the "groundbreaking for Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2" received 811 votes. After remaining stagnant since the approval of its master plan in 1996, the project finally broke ground in December 2024 thanks to swift policy decisions and adjustments to the total project cost under the 8th administration. The power supply method was confirmed as a hydrogen tram, and the total project cost was set at 1.5069 trillion won, an increase of 757.7 billion won from the original plan. The line will span a total of 38.8 kilometers, circulating through five districts, with construction underway and opening targeted for 2028.
The second most popular news was "The return of the Kkumdori family after 30 years, and the popularity of the Kkumssi Family," which received 784 votes. Daejeon has created a new character universe centered on Kkumdori called the "Kkumssi Family," using it to boost the city's brand value through a variety of merchandise and content marketing. The "Daejeon Kkumdori Ramen," launched on June 9, sold 200,000 units within its first week on the market.
The third place went to "The opening of Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark, combining sports, culture, arts, and tourism." The ballpark, which opened 61 years after the original Hanbat Baseball Stadium, has drawn attention for featuring Korea's first infinity pool and Asia's first Monster Wall. This season, with the rise of the Hanwha Eagles, the ballpark set a record for 24 consecutive sold-out home games?the longest streak in Korean professional baseball history?solidifying Daejeon's reputation as a "special baseball city."
Other notable stories included the "Daejeon 0 O’Clock Festival," Daejeon's status as a city where people want to get married, and support for marriage incentives for young couples.
Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, stated, "The past three years have been a period when Daejeon's potential truly blossomed, driven by the promotion of six strategic industries such as aerospace, bio, and semiconductors, as well as by strengthening the city's identity through initiatives like the Kkumssi Family. In the latter half of the 8th administration, we will continue to focus on delivering tangible results through projects that citizens can truly feel."
