A man who wore a green jumper and damaged the courthouse windows during the riot at the Western District Court has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison in the first trial.
On June 19, Judge Kim Hyungseok, presiding judge of the Criminal Division 5 of the Seoul Western District Court, sentenced Jeon (29), who was indicted on charges including special trespassing of a building and special destruction of public property, to three years and six months in prison. Previously, prosecutors had requested a four-year prison sentence for Jeon.
Judge Kim stated, "He committed the crime because he was angry about the news that a detention warrant had been issued for former President Yoon Suk-yeol and wanted to break something." He further said, "Attacking the court by illegal means simply because the court's decision differs from one's own views is an act that undermines the foundation of liberal democracy, and punishment corresponding to this responsibility is unavoidable."
On January 19, Jeon broke into the Western District Court and used a stick and a fire extinguisher to damage the window of the court's duty office and the entrance device on the third floor. He was also indicted for spraying a fire extinguisher at a police officer who was trying to block his entry.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Judge Kim sentenced Choi (66), who participated in the riot at the Western District Court and used violence against police officers trying to stop him, to one year in prison on charges including obstruction of official duties by special means.
