Expressing the Sensibility of the Era
Through Traditional Garments
The Lifelong Education Center at Seoul Women's University announced that it will exhibit the recreated traditional garments made by students of the 'Excavated Costume Reproduction Specialist' course in the special exhibition room of the Seoul Women's University Museum until June 27.
This exhibition, under the title 'Building Time, Weaving Tradition,' holds special significance as it presents the results of students who directly observed and measured 17th-century costume artifacts and carried out the reproduction process themselves. The exhibited works include pants, Hansam, Jeogori, Jungchimak, Jikryeong, Danryeong, and Dopo, all of which are meticulously recreated examples of Joseon Dynasty attire.
The students based their work on excavated costume artifacts of Choi Kyungseon, held by the Seoul Women's University Museum. They observed the actual artifacts and studied sewing techniques and costume structure. The exhibition reveals their rigorous process, from literature reviews on costume theory to hands-on production, as they strived to approach the essence of traditional attire.
No Seungyong, director of the Lifelong Education Center at Seoul Women's University, stated, "We hope that our efforts over the past year to recreate these garments will become a new tradition."
