IAEA: Israel Strikes Two Iranian Centrifuge Production Facilities

More Than 50 Fighter Jets Deployed in Airstrike

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on June 18 (local time) that the Israeli military struck two of Iran's centrifuge production facilities.

On X (formerly Twitter) that day, the IAEA explained, "The targeted facilities are the Tehran Research Center (TRC) in the capital city of Tehran and a plant in Karaj near Tehran."

A centrifuge is a device that increases the concentration of U-235 necessary for nuclear power generation by placing natural uranium, converted into a gaseous state (uranium hexafluoride), into a rapidly spinning cylinder. It is an essential piece of equipment for uranium enrichment, a process that can lead to the production of nuclear weapons.

Iran's main uranium enrichment facilities are located in Natanz, Isfahan Province, and Fordow, Qom Province, both in central Iran.

The Israeli military stated, "More than 50 Israeli Air Force fighter jets conducted airstrikes in Tehran over the past several hours," adding, "As part of a broad effort to prevent Iran's nuclear weapons development program, Tehran's centrifuge production facilities were targeted in the attack."
