Thirteen collaborative departments participated in the meeting to respond to the rainy season and heavy downpours. The participants shared weather forecasts and checked the response status of each department in preparation for the stationary front, which is expected to affect the region starting this weekend.
The city has strengthened preemptive measures such as maintenance of drainage systems, sewer dredging, and inspection of landslide-prone areas. In addition, Pohang City reorganized the resident evacuation system, assuming scenarios such as river flooding and urban inundation.
The city also decided to focus on preventing casualties by proactively restricting vehicle and pedestrian access in high-risk areas, including areas prone to frequent flooding, riversides, valleys, coastal areas, and underground spaces.
Pohang City will operate a system of designated responsibility involving city employees, related agencies, and private organizations. The city also plans to actively implement resident evacuation orders and mandatory evacuation measures in emergencies.
Currently, the city is enhancing on-site response capabilities through daily communication drills using the disaster safety communication network with 29 towns, townships, and neighborhoods, as well as monthly video conferences.
In particular, on June 24, Pohang City will conduct a "River Collapse and Urban Inundation Response and Resident Evacuation Drill" involving all towns, townships, and neighborhoods to assess practical response capabilities for extreme weather situations.
Vice Mayor Jang Sanggil stated, "As unpredictable heavy downpours are becoming more frequent due to climate change, we will minimize damage to citizens through preemptive and close response measures," and urged, "I ask all citizens to familiarize themselves with safety guidelines and refrain from entering high-risk areas."
