Special Exhibition in the First Floor Lobby by the Provincial Office of Education
Touring Exhibition Continues in Suncheon and Shinan in July and August
The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education is drawing attention by organizing a special exhibition that highlights the lives and roles of parents in the history of education in Jeonnam.
On June 18, the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education announced that it will hold an exhibition titled "Our Mother Was on the Path Jeonnam Education Has Walked" for two weeks starting from the 23rd in the lobby and Gallery Eum on the first floor of the office building.
This exhibition was planned with a focus on the fact that the history of education in Jeonnam was not written only within schools, but also together with parents, communities, and in everyday life. Ordinary parents, who have stood by their children as "our mother" and "our father," are the main characters of this exhibition.

In particular, this exhibition shines a spotlight on the unique lives of parents in the island regions of Jeonnam. It introduces the devoted stories of parents who raised their children while protecting the islands?on the main islands, the outlying islands, and even smaller islets where schools are located in Jeonnam.
The story of the late Moon Chaeok, a father from Suyeong, who sent letters to his child who had left for the mainland under the light of a kerosene lamp late at night after finishing work at sea, and the story of Kim Jinseop, a mother from Daegil, who raised her children by harvesting abalone while holding her breath underwater, show that the educational environment in Jeonnam was never easy.
The exhibition also features the story of Kim Yangun, a father from Hyeonwoo, who has protected the branch school in his island village, and the case of Choi Sun, who returned to her hometown and school as a teacher after being raised there. The educational environment in Jeonnam, where parents and children, schools and communities are all closely connected, is vividly depicted.
The exhibition also includes the efforts of parents who accompanied their children on the way to school. The devotion of Jeonnam parents is illustrated through specific examples, such as the late Park Seungi, a mother who rowed 34,000 ri across the sea by ferry to send her daughter Sookhyeon to school; Jo Beomseok, a father who built a cement path over the mudflats for his children who had to cross a tidal causeway that opened only at low tide; and the activities of the Green Mothers' Association, which ensured students' safety in front of schools every morning.
This exhibition goes beyond viewing the history of education only within schools, aiming to include parents, communities, and everyday life, and to preserve ordinary lives as a precious part of Jeonnam's educational history.
Lee Seonguk, head of the General Affairs Division, said, "The stories of ordinary parents have become the extraordinary history of education in Jeonnam. Starting with this exhibition, we plan to continue touring exhibitions in July at the Suncheon Bay Ecological Culture Education Center and in August at Shinan County Office, sharing this inspiration with even more people."
