The Busan Institute of Science and Technology for Higher Education Promotion (BISTEP), led by President Kim Youngbu, published the third issue of its "Science & Technology Brief" on June 18, analyzing trends in high-efficiency energy technologies such as heat pumps and Carnot batteries and their implications for the local industry.
This brief provides a comprehensive overview of the domestic and international development status, market outlook, and policy directions for heat pump and Carnot battery technologies, which can contribute to addressing the climate crisis and achieving carbon neutrality. It also presents research and development directions for promising future fields, such as industrial high-temperature heat pumps and ultra-low temperature heat pumps used in quantum computers.
Heat pumps are high-efficiency technologies that use electricity to draw external heat for heating or process heat, and have attracted attention as they are included in the current government's carbon neutrality industry strategy. Carnot batteries are next-generation energy storage technologies that store electricity as heat and convert it back into electricity, and are also drawing attention.
Busan is a region densely populated with energy-intensive industries, such as aging cold storage warehouses and metal processing facilities. Heat pumps and Carnot batteries are expected to make significant contributions to improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at industrial sites. In addition, there is a strong connection to attracting infrastructure such as data centers, which are expected to require high power usage in the future.
Kim Youngbu, President of BISTEP, stated, "This brief will serve as foundational material for establishing energy transition strategies for industries in the Busan region," adding, "Active discussions are needed for the demonstration and adoption of heat pump and Carnot battery technologies optimized for urban environments."
BISTEP's "Science & Technology Brief" is published regularly, selecting major issues and topics to enhance the understanding of science and technology among local industry, academia, and research institutes, and to provide foundational data for new business planning. The report is available on the BISTEP website.
