National Folk Museum of Korea to Hold Academic Conference for Sejong Relocation: "The Role of Museums and the Importance of Materials"

Academic Conference on Global Life History Materials to Be Reflected in Collection and Exhibition Planning for Museum’s Move to Sejong in 2031

The National Folk Museum of Korea announced on June 18 that it will hold an academic conference titled "A Window Open to the World: Collection and Utilization of Global Life History Materials" in the main auditorium on June 23.

This academic conference has been planned as part of the process of expanding the museum's focus to global life history in line with its relocation to Sejong in 2031. The conference will feature academic discussions on the necessity of understanding global life history in the era of globalization, the role of national museums, and the importance of "materials" to ensure the seamless integration of related museum activities.


Three experts specializing in global life history materials will give presentations. First, Lee Youngjin, director of the World Folk Instrument Museum, will discuss the necessity of understanding global life history and the role of museums in this context, using "musical instruments" as the main subject matter.


Next, Je Sohee, associate professor at the Department of Global Phenomena Studies at the National Museum of Ethnology in Japan, will present on the revitalization of research and collection of global life history materials, focusing on case studies from her institution.


Finally, Oh Changhyun, associate professor at the Department of Humanities Content at Mokpo National University, will propose practical ways to utilize global life history materials from a transnational perspective in exhibitions when the National Folk Museum of Korea relocates to Sejong.


A representative from the National Folk Museum of Korea stated, "We plan to actively reflect the diverse opinions presented at this academic conference in our future efforts to collect global life history materials and in the planning of exhibitions for the museum's relocation to Sejong."


The academic conference is open to anyone interested, with no separate registration required. It will also be broadcast live on the National Folk Museum of Korea's YouTube channel.
