Simultaneous Promotion of the "Village Bus Route Improvement Study"
Yongsan-gu, Seoul has installed bus information terminals (BIT) at 32 village bus stops and has officially begun their operation, aiming to strengthen mobility rights for transportation-vulnerable groups and realize resident-centered smart transportation services.
This BIT installation was promoted based on the high satisfaction of residents during last year's pilot operation at three stops, and the scale of installation has expanded more than tenfold compared to the previous year.
The BIT provides real-time bus arrival information, as well as time and weather updates. It is equipped with a high-brightness LED panel and an automatic brightness adjustment sensor for nighttime, making it easy to check information even at night. Additionally, user-friendly technology designed for transportation-vulnerable groups and a design that harmonizes with the urban landscape have been applied, simultaneously improving information delivery and the city's aesthetics.
The back of the BIT also features tourism guide content for village bus routes, serving not only the convenience of residents but also as an urban tourism service for visitors. Residents have responded positively, saying, "I feel reassured seeing the arrival information," and "The reduced waiting time greatly enhances convenience."
Yongsan-gu is also conducting a "Village Bus Route Improvement Study" alongside BIT operation. This study includes analysis of resident usage patterns, investigation of transportation efficiency by route, identification of new routes for public transportation-vulnerable areas (such as Wonhyo 2-dong and Ichon 2-dong), and analysis of route overlap between cultural shuttle buses and village buses. Through these efforts, the district plans to minimize transportation blind spots and establish a route system that meets resident demand.
Based on the results of this study, the district plans to reorganize village buses into a practical daily transportation network and create a customized transportation environment that all residents can conveniently use.
Park Heeyoung, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, stated, "Village buses are the transportation mode most closely connected to residents' daily lives, and therefore, they should function as a network that connects the community, not just as a simple means of transportation." She emphasized, "The installation of BIT and route improvements are important steps toward realizing an inclusive city without transportation blind spots." She added, "We will continue to expand smart transportation infrastructure and lead data-driven, people-centered transportation administration."
