Promotion of Commemorative Projects Such as "Construction of a Memorial Hall" Needed
The resolution urging the re-examination of General Nade Yong's achievements and the promotion of commemorative projects, which was proposed by Myeongsoo Choi, Chair of the Safety, Construction, and Firefighting Committee of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly (Democratic Party of Korea, Naju 2), passed the second plenary session of the 391st regular session on June 17.
The Geobukseon (turtle ship), which marked a pivotal turning point in the Imjin War, is more than just a warship; it is a symbolic legacy that embodies Joseon's scientific and technological advancements, tactical innovation, and creative thinking.
The person who designed and operated this innovative warship in actual combat was General Nade Yong, a native of Naju, Jeonnam Province.
This resolution calls for a national re-examination of the strategic value of General Nade Yong and the Geobukseon, the regularization of academic conferences and cultural events, and emphasizes the need for continuous policy development and the establishment of institutional foundations to support these efforts.
Additionally, it proposes that General Nade Yong's life and scientific achievements should be incorporated into elementary, middle, and high school curricula, and that educational content should be developed and distributed to young people.
The resolution also highlights the necessity of comprehensive and systematic commemorative projects to ensure that the spirit of creativity and innovation of General Nade Yong is inherited by all citizens, including the construction of a memorial hall and experiential exhibition center, as well as developing tourism resources in connection with his birthplace and related historical sites.
Myeongsoo Choi pointed out, "General Nade Yong played a key role in the victory of the Imjin War by serving as a vanguard commander in numerous naval battles, including Okpo, Hansando, Myeongnyang, and Noryang. However, despite being the general who actually designed the Geobukseon, he has long been overlooked in historical evaluations."
He particularly emphasized, "The year 2026 marks the 470th anniversary of General Nade Yong's birth, and reviving his spirit and achievements should be more than a simple historical commemoration. It must be an important task to pass on our nation's scientific spirit and national pride to future generations."
