On June 17 (local time), President Donald Trump, who abruptly returned home during the Group of Seven (G7) summit, stated that his return was not due to issues related to ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Iran, but rather for a much bigger issue.
On his social networking service Truth Social, President Trump said, "Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, who is trying to attract attention, incorrectly stated that I left the G7 summit in Canada to return to Washington, D.C. for an Israel-Iran 'ceasefire.' He is wrong!"
He continued, "He has no idea why I am going to Washington right now. And the reason is certainly not related to a ceasefire at all. It is a much bigger issue than that."
Addressing President Macron, Trump said, "Whether intentional or not, President Emmanuel is always wrong. Stay tuned!"
President Trump had originally planned to attend the G7 summit from the 15th to the 17th, but citing the situation in the Middle East, he returned home early after the leaders' dinner the previous night.
White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt stated on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that President Trump was returning early due to developments in the Middle East.
According to the British daily The Guardian and others, President Macron stated the previous day that President Trump had told G7 leaders that discussions were underway for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. After the White House announced Trump's early return, Macron told reporters, "There was an actual proposal for talks," and "There was a suggestion to achieve a ceasefire and to begin broader discussions." He also said, "If the United States can achieve a ceasefire, it would be a very good thing, and France will support and hopes for this."
