Gwangju Meteorological Administration: "Preparation Needed for Torrential Downpours"

Gwangju and Jeonnam to Enter Monsoon Season Earlier Than Usual... Rain Expected from the 20th The Gwangju and Jeonnam regions are expected to begin the monsoon season on the 20th, three days earlier than usual, with heavy rain forecasted from the 21st onward due to the stationary front. Yonhap News

The Gwangju and Jeonnam regions are expected to officially enter the monsoon season starting on June 20.

According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration on June 17, a stationary front will form over the central region on the night of June 19. As this front moves south, rain is forecasted to begin in Gwangju and Jeonnam from the early morning of June 20. If the forecast holds, the monsoon will start about three days earlier than usual, which is typically June 23.

The stationary front is expected to move further south after June 21, bringing heavy rainfall. From June 22 to June 24, the front is projected to be located from Jeju Island along the southern coast, which means Gwangju and Jeonnam will continue to be affected by rainfall. Afterward, the stationary front is expected to move north again.

During the monsoon period, temperatures are expected to be similar to average. However, during breaks in the rain, high humidity may lead to hot and muggy weather.

An official from the meteorological administration stated, "There is variability in the timing of the rainfall, so the start date of the monsoon may change," and advised, "In areas where heavy rain is expected, it is important to take precautions in advance to prevent damage such as flooding."
