On June 17, Gwangmyeong City announced that it plans to invest 20 billion won to construct a municipal art museum with a total floor area of 1,700 square meters on the site of Gihyeongdo Cultural Park, located at 499 Iljik-dong.

Currently, Gwangmyeong City has a population nearing 300,000, but there are no art museums in the area. Compared to the national average of one art museum per 180,000 people as of 2023, the city’s infrastructure is lacking.

The city aims to establish infrastructure to support the local arts ecosystem and expand opportunities for citizens to enjoy culture through the construction of the art museum. The city’s plan is to begin construction in 2027 and open the museum in the second half of 2028.

The museum will not simply serve as an exhibition space, but will be developed as a citizen-participatory, multi-purpose cultural complex that integrates art appreciation, creation, and communication. The museum will feature a 480-square-meter exhibition hall, as well as a seminar room, storage facilities, and an outdoor sculpture park.

At the front of the museum, a media facade rest area will be installed, allowing visitors to view artworks both inside and outside the building. A media facade is a facility that incorporates technology to project videos and images onto transparent glass windows.

The city also plans to establish exhibition and creative infrastructure that brings together local artists and citizens, and to create a model for collaboration among young artists, art organizations, and local communities. In the mid- to long-term, the city intends to develop a cultural belt in connection with nearby cultural facilities such as Gihyeongdo Cultural Park and Ori Historical and Cultural Park.

In particular, the city plans to construct the museum as an eco-friendly public building with high-efficiency energy facilities and a solar power generation system, aiming for “zero energy” status.

Previously, on June 12, the city held a briefing session in the main conference room at City Hall to report on the feasibility study and basic plan for the museum’s construction. Based on the results of this study, the city plans to submit the necessary documents for Gyeonggi Province’s investment review in August.

Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, stated, “The municipal art museum will become a citizen-centered cultural platform where art and everyday life naturally blend together,” adding, “We will create an open space where anyone can enjoy and create art.”
