Gwanak District Launches Signature Campaign for Nangok Line Light Rail Pre-Feasibility Study Approval

Total Length of 4.13 km from Boramae Park Station to Nanhyang-dong

Gwanak District in Seoul is launching a resident signature campaign to pass the preliminary feasibility study (pre-feasibility study) for the Nangok Line light rail, aiming to resolve public transportation inconveniences in the Nangok area.

The Nangok area is considered one of Seoul's most underserved regions in terms of urban rail service. The district plans to actively collect residents' opinions on the project to push forward with the introduction of the Nangok Line light rail, a long-standing wish of local residents. The Nangok Line is a light rail route with five stations, stretching 4.13 kilometers from Boramae Park Station (Sillim Line), passing through Sindaebang Station (Line 2), and following Nangok-ro to Nanhyang-dong.

However, the Nangok Line project plan has not passed the pre-feasibility study due to its low economic viability (B/C) under the current evaluation criteria. To overcome this, the district held a resident briefing in December last year and discussed alternatives to secure project feasibility, such as reducing the number of stations by one, enabling at-grade transfers with the Sillim Line, and cutting bus routes that overlap with the future Nangok Line, in order to reduce costs and increase demand.

The district will conduct the signature campaign both online and offline until June 26. Not only Gwanak residents but also workers and students in the district can participate. Residents can sign in person at the Gwanak District Office's Transportation Administration Division or at their nearest community center, or sign online through a QR code available on the district office's website.

Park Junhui, mayor of Gwanak District, said, "We aim to support the promotion of the Nangok Line light rail by reflecting the earnest wishes and aspirations of the residents to pass the pre-feasibility study," adding, "I ask all members of the Gwanak community to participate in the signature campaign to help resolve transportation inconveniences for Nangok residents and to promote balanced regional development."
