Gwangju Metropolitan Council: "It's Time for Tobacco Manufacturers to Take Responsibility" On the 16th, the Gwangju Metropolitan Council adopted the "Resolution Recognizing Defects in Tobacco Products and Urging Social Responsibility," jointly proposed by members of the Environment and Welfare Committee, at the 2nd plenary session of the 1st regular meeting of the 332nd session. Provided by Gwangju Metropolitan Council

The "Resolution Recognizing Defects in Tobacco Products and Urging Social Responsibility," jointly proposed by members of the Environment and Welfare Committee of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council, was passed at the 2nd plenary session of the 1st regular meeting of the 332nd session on June 16, 2025.

This resolution defines the lack of sufficient information provided to consumers about the harmful ingredients contained in tobacco products and the risks of smoking as a "significant defect in product labeling." It calls for manufacturers to acknowledge their responsibility and provide compensation for this issue.

In particular, the resolution points out that tobacco manufacturers have seriously infringed upon consumers' right to know and right to health by intentionally omitting or downplaying information about harmful ingredients other than tar and nicotine.

Choi Jihyun, a council member, emphasized, "Tobacco is not simply a matter of personal preference; it is a harmful substance that causes serious health damage. Both companies and the government must now demonstrate a responsible attitude to protect the public's right to health."

Meanwhile, this resolution will be delivered to relevant organizations, including the Office of the President, the National Assembly, the Office for Government Policy Coordination, the leaders of each political party, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. It is expected to serve as an important foundation for future legislative and policy discussions aimed at preventing smoking-related harm and promoting public health.
