Busan Veterans Affairs Office Holds 104th Memorial Ceremony for Doctor Park Jaehyuk... "We Must Remember the Spirit of His Deed"

The Busan Regional Office of Veterans Affairs (Director Namil Lee) held a memorial ceremony for the 104th anniversary of the martyrdom of Doctor Park Jaehyuk in front of the statue of Doctor Park Jaehyuk at Busan Central Park on June 14. The event was organized by the 3·1 Comrades Association.

"We Must Remember the Spirit of His Deed" Busan Veterans Affairs Office held a memorial ceremony for the 104th anniversary of the martyrdom of Doctor Park Jaehyuk and is taking a commemorative photo in front of the Busan Anti-Japanese Student Uprising Monument.

Approximately 150 people attended the ceremony, including the Head of Veterans Affairs at the Busan Regional Office of Veterans Affairs, the Director of General Affairs at Busan Metropolitan City, the Director of Secondary Education at the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, the President of the 3·1 Comrades Association, the principals of Gaeseong High School and Gaeseong Middle School, the President of the Gaeseong High School Alumni Association, and family members of the deceased. The memorial ceremony proceeded in the following order: national tribute, reading of the Declaration of Independence, introduction of Doctor Park's biography, memorial address, floral tribute, and three cheers for independence.


After the March 1st Movement in 1919, Doctor Park Jaehyuk joined the Uiyeoldan (Righteous Warriors Corps) and became active in the independence movement. In 1920, he threw a bomb at the Busan Police Station, was arrested, and imprisoned in Daegu Prison. He suffered severe pain due to torture, injuries, and tuberculosis. Before the execution of his sentence, he went on a hunger strike and died for the cause. In 1962, the government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal.


Hyoseon Lee, Head of Veterans Affairs at the Busan Regional Office of Veterans Affairs, delivered the memorial address on behalf of Director Namil Lee, stating, "Although Doctor Park Jaehyuk did not live to see liberation and gave his life for the cause, his righteous life and spirit remain with us today. I hope that this memorial ceremony serves as an opportunity to once again reflect on his noble sacrifice and ideals."
