On June 16, Kang Yoojung, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, stated during a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office, "During the breakfast meeting, both sides discussed ways to advance bilateral relations and agreed to continue close communication going forward."
Advisor Nagashima, a close aide to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, reportedly entered the country to attend a reception hosted by the Japanese Embassy in Korea to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan.
Previously, a senior official from the Presidential Office commented on the possibility of a South Korea-Japan summit being held on the occasion of the Group of Seven (G7) summit, saying, "Discussions are ongoing," and added, "There are many variables, so it is difficult to make a definitive statement."
The official further stated, "There was a very positive phone conversation between the leaders of South Korea and Japan. In this call, they agreed on the need to build on the relationship in this year marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 80th anniversary of liberation. We expect that, as an extension of this phone call, a summit meeting could take place."
