The carbon spatial map developed by the Korean government and companies will be implemented in Uzbekistan. A carbon spatial map is a visualization tool that displays carbon emissions and absorption sources in the building and transportation sectors. It is designed to ensure that carbon neutrality elements are mandatorily incorporated into urban master plans.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on June 16 that SundoSoft, a domestic company, has been selected as the implementing agency for the climate-smart urban development support project led by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The carbon spatial map was developed as a result of the Korean government’s land and transport research and development project, with SundoSoft responsible for developing the mapping system.
Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation currently operates the Korean carbon spatial map. The map updates annual carbon emission and absorption data for each of the nation’s approximately 7.2 million buildings, as well as for each road segment, based on energy usage, traffic volume, and forest stand data, using grid units of 1 km, 500 m, and 100 m. This supports local governments in incorporating carbon neutrality into their urban planning processes.
The ADB is working with the Uzbek government to introduce integrated climate response technologies, including urban carbon emission analysis and the establishment of urban climate action plans. In this process, Korea’s carbon spatial map has been selected as a key pilot technology. Over the next eight months, the project will be conducted in the local Jizzakh region, an area comparable in size to the combined Jeollanam-do and Jeollabuk-do provinces in Korea, with the goal of eventually expanding throughout Uzbekistan and neighboring Central Asian countries.
Choi Byunggil, Director of the Urban Vitality Support Division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "This is the first case of Korea’s carbon spatial mapping and carbon-neutral urban planning technologies being introduced overseas through an international organization, and we plan to further expand cooperation in related fields in the future."
