Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok Requests KBA to Recommend Assistant Special Prosecutors Yonhap News

On June 15, the KBA announced, "In response to the special prosecutor's request regarding the insurrection case, we plan to select a pool of candidates, conduct background checks, and recommend candidates for assistant special prosecutor by June 17."

Assistant special prosecutors are responsible for investigating the case, maintaining the prosecution, overseeing special investigators and dispatched officials, and handling media relations, all under the direction and supervision of the special prosecutor. They receive treatment equivalent to that of a chief prosecutor.

The KBA stated that it has not received separate requests for candidate recommendations from other special prosecutors, such as those handling the cases of Kim Kunhee or Chae Sangbyeong. The insurrection special prosecutor may have six assistant special prosecutors, while the special prosecutors for Chae Sangbyeong and Kim Kunhee may each have four assistant special prosecutors.

According to the Special Prosecutor Act, from June 12, when the special prosecutor was appointed, the office has up to 20 days to prepare, during which it may request the appointment of assistant special prosecutors, secure office space, and form the investigation team, among other necessary preparations.
