Full-Scale Efforts to Protect the Health of Seniors Vulnerable to Heatwaves
Yongsan District in Seoul is launching full-scale operations of the "Senior Cooling Centers" and "Safe Accommodation" programs to protect the health of seniors from the heatwave this summer. These are proactive protective measures for seniors in the district who are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.
The district has designated a total of 68 locations, including senior centers and welfare centers, as "Senior Cooling Centers," which have been in operation since May 15. The centers are open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and, in the event of a heatwave advisory, operating hours are extended until 9 p.m. and the centers are also open on weekends. Anyone can use these facilities freely.
In addition, since April, the district has conducted a comprehensive inspection of air conditioning devices at 84 senior centers, completing cleaning and refrigerant refilling as needed. Devices that were outdated or malfunctioning were either repaired or replaced with new installations.
If any issues arise with air conditioning devices during operation, the Yongsan Welfare Facility Task Force "Speed Yong Banjang" is dispatched immediately to respond on-site. They provide prompt services, including user guidance and connecting with repair companies.
Meanwhile, when a heatwave advisory is issued, the district will also operate the "Safe Accommodation" program for seniors in vulnerable housing situations. On June 2, the district signed a business agreement with New World Hotel and plans to provide up to 10 rooms as shelters for three months starting in July.
Seniors who wish to use the accommodation can apply through their local community service center. After eligibility is confirmed, they will be issued a "Certificate of Use" and can access the accommodation. Each person can stay up to 10 times, and all costs will be fully covered by Yongsan District.
Additionally, when a heatwave advisory is in effect, the district will make welfare calls to approximately 1,000 recipients of the customized senior care service and around 200 recipients of the home visit health management service. If contact cannot be made, staff will visit homes in person to check on their safety.
Park Heeyoung, Mayor of Yongsan District, stated, "As this summer is expected to be hotter than usual, it is extremely important to prevent heat-related illnesses among seniors. With the implementation of the five-day meal service, the usage rate of senior centers is also increasing. We will pay close attention and provide support to ensure that seniors can spend a safe and comfortable summer despite the heat."
