Damyang County Holds "80th Anniversary of Liberation and 45th Anniversary of May 18" Commemorative Ceremony

Under the Theme: "Beyond May, Let Us Become the Light of Independence and Peace"

At the commemorative ceremony for the 80th anniversary of Liberation and the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, hosted by the Damyang Liberation 80th Anniversary Event Committee on the 13th, County Governor Jeong Cheolwon delivered a congratulatory speech. The Damyang Liberation 80th Anniversary Event Committee in Jeollanam-do announced on the 14th that it held the "80th Anniversary of Liberation and 45th Anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising Commemorative Ceremony" at the Damyang Sports Complex on the 13th, under the theme "Beyond May, Let Us Become the Light of Independence and Peace."

This event was organized by the Damyang Liberation 80th Anniversary Event Committee, which was formed around the Damyang May 18 Democratic Uprising Commemoration Committee (led by Yoon Youngmin), the Damyang June 15 National Reunification and Peace Solidarity (led by Kim Gwanghun), and the Damyang Peace Statue Committee (led by Son Sunyong).

Marking 80 years since Liberation and the division of the Korean Peninsula, as well as the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, the event was prepared to allow youth and local residents to reflect on the pains of Korean history and to reaffirm the values of peace and democracy on the Korean Peninsula.

At the venue, a variety of programs were held, including experience booths, a historical photo exhibition, a scholarship quiz, the commemorative ceremony, and sharing of rice balls. More than 300 people participated, including County Governor Jeong Cheolwon, Damyang County Council Chairperson Jang Myeongyeong, honorees, youth, and local residents.

County Governor Jeong Cheolwon (Honorary Representative of the Event Committee) emphasized, "This event is a meaningful occasion to remember the hardships, resistance, and sacrifices of our nation, and to once again reflect on the hope for independence, peace, and reunification. The county government will continue its efforts to deeply root the values of history and peace within the local community."
