The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), which is investigating allegations of external pressure in the death of Marine Corps Corporal Chae, is currently questioning Kim Donghyuk, head of the military prosecution team.
On June 13, the CIO summoned Kim for questioning as a suspect starting from the morning of that day.
Kim is suspected of having led the process of retrieving the Marine’s death case from the police. Last year, he submitted a so-called "blank phone" with all call records deleted to the CIO.
Kim indicted former Marine Corps Investigation Team Commander Park Junghoon (Colonel) on charges of insubordination. The CIO is reportedly investigating whether the presidential office was involved in this process. The agency is also expected to look into the circumstances surrounding the deletion of data from Kim’s mobile phone.
Meanwhile, on June 12, President Lee Jaemyung appointed Lee Myunghyun as special prosecutor for the "Corporal Chae special investigation." Lee, a former military judge advocate, previously led the 2022 investigation into allegations of military service corruption involving the eldest son of former Grand National Party leader Lee Hoi-chang. The special prosecution team is expected to include four assistant special prosecutors and twenty dispatched prosecutors to investigate the allegations.
