Including Dryers, Dishwashers, Freezers, Ranges, and Ovens
The Donald Trump administration in the United States has decided to impose tariffs on steel used in home appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines.
On June 12 (local time), the U.S. Department of Commerce announced in the Federal Register that it has added home appliances to the list of steel derivative products subject to a 50% steel tariff. The newly added products include refrigerators, dryers, washing machines, dishwashers, freezers, cooking stoves, ranges, ovens, and food waste disposers.
Previously, in March, the Trump administration imposed a 25% tariff on steel and applied a 25% tariff to steel derivative products based on the value of steel content in those products. This means that a 25% tariff was imposed on the value of steel used in specific products. As of June 4, the Trump administration raised tariffs on steel and steel derivative products to 50%.
Although Korean home appliance companies such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics manufacture some products, including washing machines, in the United States, a significant volume is produced in Korea and Mexico for export, so these companies are expected to be affected by the new tariffs.
The tariffs on the newly added products will take effect starting June 23.
