Iksan Arts Center to Host Performance on the 19th
Featuring Iksan Municipal Dance Company and Pungmul Troupe
Iksan City in North Jeolla Province will host the 'Next Motion Member-Created Project' performance at 7:30 p.m. on the 19th at the Grand Theater of the Iksan Arts Center.
According to the city on the 12th, this performance is a joint regular event featuring the Iksan Municipal Dance Company (Artistic Director Choi Seokyeol) and the Iksan Municipal Pungmul Troupe (Artistic Director Kim Ikju).
Since its inception in 2019, the project has presented works characterized by fresh perspectives and experimental approaches over four performances until 2022, and this month marks the grand opening of its fifth show.
This year’s performance will also feature pieces that highlight the unique qualities of both the dance and pungmul troupes. The Iksan Municipal Pungmul Troupe’s 'Yupung: Flow of Time' (Percussion Composition by Shin Jiyong) will creatively express the passage of time, centering on the drum, humanity’s first percussion instrument.
In addition, the original gutpan performance 'PAN' (Percussion Composition by Kim Hyunju) is based on Honam Udo Nongak, focusing on traditional rhythms and Jinpuri, and combines the dynamic structure of Samul Pangut.
The Iksan Municipal Dance Company’s 'Unfinished Stories' (Directed and Choreographed by Choi Sujin and Ko Kyungbo) tells the story of the father’s generation in the 1950s, delivering messages that could not be passed down to descendants through a novel perspective as they look back on their youth.
As suggested by the theme 'Next Motion,' this performance expands the boundaries of Korean dance and pungmul through new movements and music rooted in tradition.
In particular, the creative perspectives of young artists who will lead the future of local culture will be showcased, exploring new directions for traditional art and highlighting Iksan’s artistic potential.
All tickets are free, and the performance is open to audiences aged 8 and above. For more information, visit the Iksan Arts Center website or inquire by phone.
A city official stated, "This joint performance is expected to showcase the creativity and true spirit of collaboration of the Iksan Municipal Arts Troupes," adding, "We hope to deliver new inspiration and emotion to citizens through a stage where tradition and modernity come together."
