Police have launched an investigation after students at an elementary school in Incheon showed abnormal symptoms after eating expired jelly given to them by a woman in her 40s.

According to the Bupyeong Police Station in Incheon, at around 1:09 p.m. on June 11, a report was made to the police emergency number 112 stating, "Students developed stomachaches after eating jelly handed out by a stranger" at an elementary school in Bupyeong-gu.

The school reported the incident to the police immediately after four out of six students who had received jelly from a woman identified as Ms. A, in her 40s, complained of abnormal symptoms such as nausea.

All of the affected students are fifth graders and friends. They were on the playground during lunchtime when Ms. A distributed the jelly near the school’s main gate. It was later revealed that the jelly Ms. A had was about one year past its expiration date.

The students who showed symptoms were taken to a nearby hospital. Some received intravenous fluids, but all of them recovered and were expected to be discharged soon.

A school official explained, "After becoming aware of the incident, we reported Ms. A to the police and identified the students who had received the jelly through a school broadcast so they could receive medical treatment."

The police collected the jelly at the scene and brought Ms. A to the local police station to confirm her identity before allowing her to return home. Police have requested a component analysis of the jelly from the National Forensic Service and plan to summon Ms. A soon to investigate the details of the incident.

A police official stated, "We have launched a preliminary investigation on suspicion of bodily injury by negligence," and added, "We will investigate whether Ms. A knowingly distributed expired jelly to the children."
