The Environment and Welfare Committee of Gwangju City Council, chaired by Choi Ji-hyun, conducted an on-site visit to the Gwangju Health and Environment Research Institute on the morning of the 11th.
This visit was organized to review the progress of the institute's key projects and to directly listen to difficulties faced on site in order to seek possible improvements.
Members of the committee visited the Food and Drug Research Department of the institute and requested that systematic food inspections be carried out to ensure the safety of the public’s meals. At the Infectious Disease Research Department, they called for the strengthening of rapid response systems to prevent mass food poisoning incidents during the summer.
Additionally, regarding the recent Kumho Tire fire, the committee asked the Environmental Research Department to intensify monitoring of air pollutants such as fine dust and to thoroughly conduct water quality safety inspections, emphasizing the need to address growing public concerns about environmental pollution and to contribute to creating a pleasant urban environment.
The committee also visited the Animal Hygiene Testing Center, stressing the necessity of thorough quarantine management to prevent infectious diseases among companion animals, livestock products, and wild animals, as well as to block the spread of livestock epidemics.
Choi Ji-hyun, the committee chair, stated, "The Health and Environment Research Institute plays a vital role on the front lines in safeguarding the health and environment of Gwangju citizens," and added, "We ask that you continue to maintain proactive inspections and rapid response systems to do your utmost for citizen safety and to improve quality of life."
